1. What is Rapeseed oil

Original rapeseed oil was high in erucic acid, which can cause heart failure, and glucosinolates, which can cause thyroid problems.
※In fact, there are not many studies that support erucic acid's toxicity to humans. (Studies have shown that ingestion of erucic acid caused heart necrosis in mice.)

Currently, rapeseed oil sold as rapeseed oil has been improved to reduce erucic acid and glucosinolate, and there are several types such as Kizakino rape, Asaka rape, and Nanashikibu.
It contains a large amount of oleic acid and has a high smoke point, making it an excellent oil that can be used daily for stir-frying and deep-frying.

Main fatty acids Oleic acid
Cooking High temperature heating OK
Storage method Dark and cool place
Taste / Aroma / Texture A little thick and rich
Fat-soluble vitamins Vitamin E
rapeseed oil fatty acid

The difference between rapeseed oil and canola oil

Canola oil is a rapeseed oil made from a variety called canola, which has been bred in Canada to eliminate erucic acid and glucosinolate.
People tend to think it would be good without erucic acid and glucosinolates, but in order to stably produce canola oil in large quantities, it is genetically modified and solvent-extracted using hexane. So the danger is similar to salad oil.

2. Effects of Rapeseed oil

The most notable effect of rapeseed oil is its abundant oleic acid.

Relieve constipation!

Oleic acid has the effect of activating gastrointestinal motility, and promotes excretion of stool that has accumulated due to poor gastrointestinal motility.
If constipation continues chronically, it causes rough skin and cancer, so get rid of it as soon as possible!

Regulate your blood cholesterol!

In addition, oleic acid has reduce LDL-cholesterol while maintaining HDL-cholesterol in the blood. So LDL-cholesterol is high, and it helps to smooth the blood that has become mush!

3. How to use Rapeseed oil

・Daily cooking and deep fried food

Rapeseed oil, which contains a large amount of oleic acid, is resistant to heat, so it can be used for everyday cooking without worrying about how to cook.

・For bread

Cold-pressed rapeseed oil is slightly thicker and has a distinctive aroma of rapeseed.
It is also recommended to put it on bread like olive oil, or put it on salads and warm vegetables.

・For making sweets

In the same way, there is rice oil that can be used for anything. Compared to rice oil, which tends to be crispy, rapeseed oil tends to be moist, so it is suitable as a substitute for butter when making cakes and other sweets.

4. Notes of Rapeseed oil

When choosing a rapeseed oil, be careful not to confuse real rapeseed oil with canola oil.
By the way, rapeseed-derived oil is divided into "rapeseed oil", "refined rapeseed oil", and "rapeseed salad oil (canola oil)" according to the degree of refinement. Among them, "rapeseed oil" is the least refined and has the highest nutritional value, and "rapeseed salad oil (canola oil)" is the most refined and the least nutritious.

If you buy rapeseed oil, choose low-refined "rapeseed oil"!
In addition, if you have something manufactured with organic ingredients or cold pressed, that is definitely recommended!
Since the degree of refinement is low, it has the original flavor and aroma of rapeseed, and as I introduced in the above [How to use rapeseed oil], it is delicious with pasta, bread, and salads just like olive oil!
